PENSACOLA, Fla. —
In a match that proved to be back-and-forth throughout, Ouachita Baptist edged Valdosta State 5-4 in men's tennis action at the Carson Tennis Complex Friday.
The Tigers opened the scoring with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, where Leon Ferran and Ricardo Bissani defeated Andrew Harvin and Joachim Schemm. VSU evened the match as Taamo Haake and Sebastin Jasyk topped Helge Knuth and Teodor Valentin 8-6 at No. 2, but OBU regained the lead when Marko Boskovic and Vitor Oliveria downed Konstantin Kutschenko and Mario Navarro by the same score at No. 1.
The two teams traded points in singles play, started by the 39th-ranked Knuth defeating Schemm 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 to give Ouachita Baptist a 3-1 lead. Navarro followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Oliveria at No. 3 while Valentin topped Jasyk 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Tigers.
Haake got VSU back within a point with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 win over Ferran at No. 5 while the final two matches also went three sets. At No. 1, Kutschenko looked poised to even the match as he split the first two sets with Boskovic, dropping the first 6-4 before rebounding for a 6-1 win in the second, and built a 4-1 advantage in the third set. However, the OBU player stormed back to claim the third set 6-4 to give Ouachita Baptist the victory.
Harvin closed out the match with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Bassani at No. 6.
