Lowndes’ Brown named All-State

VALDOSTA — Lowndes junior forward Tashia Brown was named Second Team All-State by the Georgia Sportswriters Association on Tuesday, while a pair of Valdosta seniors were named Honorable Mention.

Brown, who is receiving college interest from several Division I schools — including Western Kentucky — was named to the second team after averaging 22 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks per game this season for the Vikettes, who finished with a 16-10 record.

The all-state honor for Brown is the first for a Lowndes player since Keira Peak was named All-State following her senior season with the Vikettes in 2009.

Peak’s cousin, Valdosta senior Stormm Phillips, was named an Honorable Mention this season, after leading the Valdosta Lady Wildcats with 17 points, four assists and five steals per game this season.

In November, Phillips surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career. She finished her career with over 1,300 points and was named the Region 1-6A Defensive Player of the Year.

Fellow Valdosta senior Clarence Smith also garnered all-state honors on Tuesday. Smith averaged a team-best 19 points for the Wildcats this season. He also averaged six rebounds per game and was voted First Team All-Region.

Tift County’s Brannen Greene and Tadric Jackson were each named to the boys’ first team, while Colquitt Country’s Makeba Ponder was named to the second team for the girls.

Greene was also named the state of Georgia’s Mr. Basketball, an honor rewarded to the state’s best overall male player. Norcross’ Diamond DeShields was named Miss Basketball, and will likely be awarded national player of the year

honors.
