A trio of Valdosta State athletes were honored by the Gulf South Conference on Tuesday.
Baseball pitcher Nick Fogarty was named Pitcher of the Week, while women’s basketball forward Brittney Nelson and softball’s Morgan Johnson were each named Players of the Week.
After throwing just the fifth perfect game in conference history, Fogarty was named the GSC's Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week.
Fogarty was recognized after retiring all 21 batters he faced in VSU's 12-0 victory over Paine in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. He struck out nine batters, induced five ground balls and had seven fly ball outs to improve his record to 2-0 on the year. The perfect game was the second in Valdosta State history.
On the year, Fogarty has pitched 13.0 innings and allowed just two hits and three walks. He has struck out 21 batters and has not allowed a base runner past second base on the season.
After leading Valdosta State to a pair of victories last week, Nelson has been named the Noah Basketball Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, her third honor of the season.
Nelson tallied 41 points and 12 rebounds over the two games. She opened the week with 20 points and eight rebounds against Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday before pouring in 21 points and snagging four rebounds against Shorter on Saturday.
Nelson helped force the Shorter game into overtime as she connected on a three-pointe with five seconds remaining in regulation of the game to even the score.
On the week, Nelson made 15 of 26 field goal attempts to shoot 57.7 percent from the floor on the week. She was particularly successful from beyond the three-point arc, where she made 9 of 16 shots, or 56.3 percent of her attempts. She also dished out one assist and had two steals.
Nelson and the Lady Blazers return to action Thursday at 6 p.m., when they host West Georgia in conference play. The VSU men will follow at 8 p.m.
After leading Valdosta State to a 4-0 record on opening weekend, Johnson was named the GSC Player of the Week for the span that covered the first 10 days of the season.
Johnson, the 2010 GSC Freshman of the Year and the winner of the 2012 Commissioner’s Trophy, was recognized after batting .500 while driving in five runs during the team’s 4-0 start to the season. She finished the weekend with a team-high three home runs.
Johnson hit safely in all four games during the opening weekend tournament, including home runs in the first, second and fourth games of the year. She also scored at least one run in all four games while also driving in at least one.
