VSU Volleyball starts 2-0

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State volleyball team completed a perfect start to their 2013 campaign under new coach Mike Swan, as they defeated both Georgia College and Notre Dame College to establish an early 2-0 season record.

Valdosta State opened up on a high note, defeating Georgia College and State 3-1 in game one of Friday's double header. The Blazers fell in the first set 25-20, but bounced back to take the second set in a tight 27-25 struggle. Valdosta State followed up in third set with dominating 25-9 victory.

The match concluded when the Blazers took the fourth and final set 25-21.

Juniors Lelalelei Nomura and Destiny Berry led the charge for the Blazers in the first contest, hitting .462 and .444, respectively.

Nomura tallied 26 attacks in game one, connecting for 15 kills and only three errors. Berry also delivered nine kills with 18 total attacks, and Jenna Kirkwood provided extended offensive firepower for Blazers with nine kills.

Jessica Codato paced the Blazers with 39 assists in the match along with two service aces, while Ashley Lala swung for four service aces and led the team with 12 digs.

n the second match, Valdosta State continued their strong performance taking three consecutive sets, 25-18, 25-18, and 25-14.

Berry continued her strong performance on the day, hitting .562 with 12 kills in 16 attempts, while Kirkwood led the offensive attack in the second match with 15 kills.

Codato added to her assist total on the day with 17, and Lala shared setting duties with 11 assists of her own. Freshman Natalia Campos led the defense with 12 digs.

Valdosta State continues competition in the West Georgia Invitational tomorrow in Carrollton, Ga., starting with the first of two matches on the day against Malone College at 2 p.m.
