The Lowndes varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader at Tift County Friday, improving to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in Region 1-6A.
The Vikings won game one 15-14 and game two 5-4.
In game one, the Blue Devils and the Vikings combined for 32 hits (16 each), with 12 players recording multiple hits in the game. The Blue Devils took a 4-1 lead in the first inning, only to see the Vikings score four runs in the second and two more in the third to take a 7-4 lead. The Vikings extended their lead to 8-4 in the top of the fourth inning, but the Blue Devils managed a run and led 8-5 heading into the fifth inning.
In the fifth, Lowndes scored six runs and Tift County scored eight runs, adding another in the sixth. The score was tied 14-14 heading into the seventh inning, which is when the Vikings scored the game-winning run.
In game two, Lowndes rallied from a 4-3 deficit and scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings to secure a 5-4 victory.
Lowndes’ Josh Day was the top performer Friday. The catcher finished the doubleheader 6 of 7 with four runs batted in and four runs scored.
Pitcher Logan Hutchinson earned the victory in both games for the Vikings. Hutchinson allowed one run on four hits in 3 1/3 combined innings pitched in the doubleheader.
