ORLANDO, Fla. —
Valdosta State’s golf team shot an opening round 294, followed by a second round 303, and finished the first day of play in fifth place with a 21-over 597 at the McDonough Cup held at the par-72, 7,001-yard Rio Pinar Country Club on Monday.
The Blazers finished the day 12 strokes behind tournament leader Nova Southeastern, who shot 294-291 for a 585. Lynn was second at 587, while Florida Southern shot a 593 and Mount Olive a 596. Georgia College, Columbus State, Rollins and Florida Tech tied for sixth at 602, while Barry rounded out the top 10 at 603.
Carson-Newman shot a 604 and is in 11th place, followed by Armstrong Atlantic at 608 and Queens at 611. Flagler was 14th at 613, while Catawba, UNC Pembroke and Tampa tied for 15th at 622. Eckerd rounded out the 18-team field with a 635.
The Blazers placed a pair of golfers in the top 20. Nate Anderson is tied for seventh after shooting two over with a 71-75. Abdul Sihag tied for 19th at 149 with a 71-78. John Fordham was a stroke behind Sihag and tied for 27th at 76-74. Clarke Hendrick tied for 41st at 153 with a 76-77, while Austin Graham was 88th after shooting 163 (86-77).
The tournament concludes with a single round of play beginning at 8:25 a.m. on Tuesday.
