Union too much for Lady Blazers to handle

Jackson, Tenn. — The Lady Blazers were unable to overcome a barrage of three pointers by Union on Saturday and fell to the Lady Bulldogs 80-45 in Gulf South Conference action at Fred DeLay Gymnasium in Jackson, Tenn..

With the win, Union improved to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the GSC, while Valdosta State fell to 8-4, 3-3 in Gulf South Conference play.

The story of the day was the incredible shooting of the Lady Bulldogs. Union put together a 23-55 performance from the field for 41.8 percent and shot 17-29 from three point range for a stunning 58.6 percent.

Seven different players connected from long range at least once for Union, but all eyes were fixed on the performance of Amber Rechis. The Florida Gulf Coast junior transfer put together a team high 30 point afternoon on 9-10 shooting from the field. Eight of her nine field goals were from three point range, and she also shot 4-4 from the charity stripe. Prior to the contest, Rechis' season high was 12 points, which came on Thursday night against the West Florida Argonauts.

The Lady Blazers were plagued throughout the course of the afternoon on turnovers with 22, and Union made the most of the opportunities with 27 points off of Valdosta State's miscues.

Valdosta State had nine different players put points on the board during the contest, but the attack was just not enough to overcome Union's performance.

Reshaundra Owens was the leading rebounder for the red and black for the second straight game with six, and April Thomas led all Lady Blazers for the fourth time in five games with 17 points. Thomas finished 7-12 from the field and 3-6 from long distance.

Amy Philamlee, the Lady Bulldogs leading scorer this season, was held to only five points in the game, but Astrid Hutteman and Kelsey Risner each tallied double digits on the afternoon with 10 and 11 points, respectively, to go along with the career day of Rechis.

Valdosta State will continue play on the road next week with a trip to Carrollton, Ga. to face the West Georgia wolves next Thursday. The match up is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.
