On Friday and Saturday, the Wildcat Invitational wrestling tournament was held at Valdosta High School with 16 teams from Georgia and Florida participating.
The winner of the overall team competition was Kennesaw Mountain High from Kennesaw, with a team score of 198 points.
Local schools that participated included Lowndes High, which came in fifth place with 143.5 points, Berrien High (13th place) and Cook High (14th place).
The host school, Valdosta High, finished in seventh place with 111 points, but did have two wrestlers place first in their respective weight classes.
Senior Jarves Gilliard placed first in the 172 pound class, while junior Mason Schmitt finished first in the 122 pound class.
“The start of the tournament was delayed a little on Friday, but it ran smoothly after. We didn’t finish too high as a whole team, but we will be prepared for next week’s challenge.” said Valdosta High wrestling coach Benjy Scarbor.
Lowndes High had one participant finish in first place, Austin Ogburn, who won the honors in the 197 pound weight class. Robbie Powell came in second place in the 128 weight class competition.
“I'm thankful for our sponsors. It was a great tune-up for our region duel next weekend in Camden. The top two teams make it to state,” said Scarbor.
Valdosta High, along with Lowndes and other Class 6-A region teams will compete in the ‘Region Duel’ on Friday through Saturday at Camden County High School.
