Lady Blazers look to rebound against Lynn

VALDOSTA — The final game before Christmas is slated for a 2 p.m. start at The Complex today and it's shaping up to be one that Lady Blazer fans won't want to miss.

The Lynn Fighting Knights bring their 6-1 record to Valdosta to face a Lady Blazer squad that currently stands at 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference after falling on the road to the Lee Lady Flames on Thursday night.

Lynn has enjoyed a strong season thus far, proven by a record which includes early season wins over two tough opponents out of the Gulf South Conference.

The Fighting nights faced both West Florida and No. 12 Delta State in a season opening tournament in Pensacola earlier this season and came away victorious in both contests with 58-54 and 65-63, respectively.

Under Niki Washington, the reigning Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year, the Fighting Knights feature an intimidating presence on the defensive side of the ball, led by Charla Nelson-James and Isidora Madzarevic, a pair of junior forwards who stand at 6'-2" and 6'-3", respectively.

While the duo doesn't pose a huge threat on offense, the two have made their presence on the court known with a combined 22 blocks on the season.

Offensively, the Fighting Knights are led by Zachara Bailey, a sophomore from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.. The guard has tallied 13 baskets from beyond the arc in her seven games played and has shown deadly accuracy from the charity stripe with an 84.6 free-throw percentage (22-26). She currently leads the team with a 12.1 points per game average.

The Lady Blazers will aim to continue their balanced attack on offense. Currently, the Lady Blazers' Amy Duke, Kamyia Smith, and April Thomas are each averaging nearly ten points per game, and Thomas' 13.0 points per game has placed her among the top ten of all scorers in the Gulf South Conference.

Valdosta State will be counting on Blazer Nation to help drive the team to a strong finish in 2013 at the new and improved Complex on Sunday in a highly anticipated matchup between two of the top Division II teams in the southeast beginning at 2 p.m.

  • Lowndes_McPherson.jpg Milestones on tap for upcoming season

Some milestones are destined to occur, like when Georgia Christian hosts David Emanuel on Aug. 22 in the Generals’ first varsity football game since the late 1960s.
Others will have to wait and see what continues to take shape come Friday when teams can begin fall practice, and especially Aug. 1 when teams can suit up in pads for the first time, such as can Valdosta win its record 24th state title, or can Lowndes capture its fourth state championship under Randy McPherson, or can Valwood and coach Ashley Henderson play in its third straight GISA state championship game?
As we start to find out the answers to those questions in just a few short weeks — the regular season is just 31 days away — there should be a few more milestones for area coaches to mark 2014 right along with the Generals getting back on the gridiron.

With football summer workouts in full swing, occasionally the intensity and competitive drive can wane going against teammates. But on Friday, Valwood, Brookwood, Lanier County and Tiftarea Academy broke up the monotony by meeting at Goddard Field for a four-team, 7-on-7 passing league.

If Ed Pilcher had his way, Berrien High would never throw the football.
But that doesn't mean the veteran coach doesn't enjoy the opportunity that a passing league, or the six-team passing camp at Cairo on Thursday morning, can provide his Rebels.
