Robert Powell, a member of the basketball team on South Georgia State College’s Waycross Campus, has signed a letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Shorter University in Rome.
A 6-foot-5 sophomore from Valdosta, Powell played two seasons for the former Waycross College Swamp Foxes. He averaged 10.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game during the 2012-13 season. Powell’s rebounding average placed him in the top 10 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). He was third in the conference in total rebounds (192).
A health and physical education major, Powell said it “feels great” to play basketball for a four-year university.
“It should be a great experience to play against different talent,” he said.
Powell is one of 26 former Swamp Fox players to sign with a four-year college or university since the program began in 2009.
Head coach Cory Baldwin is proud of Powell’s work over the last two years.
“Rob has been the most athletic player we’ve had in our program,” Baldwin said. ‘It’s great to see him move on.”
