Lowndes softball wins twice at sectionals

LOVEJOY — Lowndes High’s softball team won its first two games at the South sectional tournament Friday.

The Vikettes opened the tournament with a 6-2 victory over Jenkins. Lauren Revels pitched a complete game, holding Jenkins to three hits and one earned run, striking out four. Revels also had two hits and drove in a run. Brittany Corbitt had a two-run single, and Sarah Santana scored two runs for Lowndes.

Lowndes then hammered Newton 14-1 in five innings in its second game. Morgan Harris went 2-for-3 with a grand slam, a double and six RBIs.

Revels (17-12) allowed just one hit and struck out two, and at the plate, she was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Corbitt was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Dionne Bishop was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Kristin Broadway had two hits and scored three runs. The Vikettes pounded out 17 hits.

Lowndes (20-14) faces Houston County at 2 p.m. today. LHS needs to win one game today to earn a berth in the state finals in Columbus.

Lowndes freshmen beat Coffee

DOUGLAS — Lowndes High’s freshman football team defeated Coffee 34-27 Thursday at Jardine Stadium.

Dale McBurrough scored on runs of 3 and 5 yards for the Vikings. Geraldo Orta had a 28-yard touchdown run, Jamie Brooks had a 4-yard touchdown run and Kenneth Durden threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Troy Braswell in the victory.

Lowndes (6-0) travels to Valdosta for its final game of the season next week.
