VSU tied for 7th at Shark Invitational

— PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Valdosta State shot a 16-over-par 304 on a water-logged course to finish the first day of play tied for seventh, out of 15 teams, at the NSU Shark Invitational Monday.
Monday’s first day of play was originally scheduled for 36 holes, but the contestants played through rain for much of the day before a three-hour lightning delay in the afternoon caused the cancellation of the second round of play.
Barry held the first-round lead with a seven-under 281, while host Nova Southeastern was second with a two-over 290. Indianapolis was five strokes behind in third, while Division I Florida Atlantic sat in fourth at 12-over (300). Lynn and Flagler bested the Blazers by two strokes (302) to tie for fifth. Florida Tech matched VSU at 304.
Embry-Riddle finished the day ninth at 305, while Eckerd and Division I Rutgers tied for 10th at 19-over (307). Another Division I squad, Navy, was 12th at 314 (plus-26), followed by Northwood (319), McDaniel (322) and Post (323).
Cole Willis led the Blazers with an even-par 72, which put him in a tie for eighth. Brent Witcher was three-over and tied for 22nd. Will Repko was a stroke behind Witcher and tied for 32nd, while Chesley Gunn and Chad Smith tied for 55th with a pair of 81s (plus-9).
Barry’s Matt Jonah held the first round lead with a three-under 69, followed by a pair of his teammates, Carlos Velez and Chris Carlin, as well as Indianapolis’ Justin Hueber at 70.
The tournament concludes with a single round of play on Tuesday.
