VALDOSTA – The three Lowndes County high school football teams all won again last week, but other teams in the area weren’t so lucky.

Only one team from 1-AA in the area and one from 1-A have winning records, and only one of each won last Friday.

In 1-AA, the Cook Hornets (3-2, 1-2) are having a good first year under new head coach Jim Scroggins. However, their worst loss of the season came Friday, when they fell to the Thomasville Bulldogs, 28-0.

Cook jumped out to a great start of the season by beating 1-AAAAA Colquitt County 14-0, but they suffered a tough 21-14 loss to Early County to start their region schedule. Early, Thomasville and Fitzgerald currently look like the favorites in 1-AA.

On the season, the Hornets are averaging 22.4 points per game and allowing 19 points per game. They will be traveling to winless Albany (0-6) this Saturday, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

The Brooks County Trojans (2-4, 2-2) are sitting in fifth place, currently on the outside looking in, in one of AA’s deepest regions. They have begun turning their season around after losing their first four games.

The Trojans are averaging 17 points per game on offense, but their 18.3 points per game on defense is what keeps them in most games.

Last week, the Trojans beat their neighbors to the north, Berrien, 21-0. It was Brooks County’s second win a row.

This week Brooks travels to No. 4 Early County, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

The Berrien Rebels (2-4, 1-3) have faced good and bad teams, but as of now are sitting third from the bottom. After losing its first game of the season, Berrien won two in a row, including its first region game.

Now the Rebels are in a slide, losing its past three games. In all four losses, Berrien has been shut out. The Rebels are only averaging 4.5 points per game on offense, while allowing 22.5 points per game.

This week, the Rebels travel to No. 3 Fitzgerald to face off with the undefeated Purple Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m.

In all, the three 1-AA teams are sitting in fifth through seventh place with only five weeks left in the season. For any of the three to make a postseason bid, they have to start playing catch-up soon.

The top three teams in the region have not lost a region game yet. Randolph-Clay (3-2, 2-2) sits in fourth place and owns the tie-breaker over the Trojans, but Cook owns a tiebreaker over the Red Devils.
