CORDELE — Lowndes High’s softball team won a 15-inning marathon Tuesday evening, defeating Northside 7-6 at the Region 1-AAAAA tournament.

Brooklyn Cauthen’s two-run single in the bottom of the 15th gave the Vikettes a 7-6 win.

Kaylin McCoy was the winning pitcher, pitching the final 13 innings and striking out 12. McCoy also homered in the game.

Last year, Lowndes also beat Northside in a 15-inning game.

In their tournament opener, the Vikettes defeated Tift County 1-0. Brittany Corbitt’s first career home run, hit in the first inning, was the game’s only run. Ashley Chapman pitched a complete game and struck out 13 batters to earn the win for Lowndes.

With the win, Lowndes clinched a spot in the state sectional tournament. The Vikettes, ranked eighth in the state, will play No. 3 Houston County at 5:45 p.m. today.
