Valwood loses heartbreaker to Brookwood School

Staff Reports

VALDOSTA — The Valwood Valiants came close to winning their first game under new head coach Brannon Tidwell Friday night, but they came up one yard short.

The Brookwood School Warriors scored on a quarterback keeper from one yard out to take a 10-6 lead in the second half on the Valiants at Goddard Field. The Warriors held on for the 10-6 win.

“It was tough, but we played hard,” Tidwell said. “I know I sound like a broken record, but we’ve gotten better each week.”

The Valiants fell to 0-4 with the loss. It was by far their best performance of the year.

“The kids were down after the game,” Tidwell said. “They were more upset about this loss than the other ones because they felt like they could win.”

Brookwood School took a 3-0 lead into halftime, but Valwood quarterback J.B. Bahnsen and running back Alex Waldron hooked up for a 75-yard touchdown play early in the third quarter. The Valiants missed the extra point, but they held a 6-3 lead.

The Warriors needed all four plays inside the Valwood 10-yard line to score later in the half.

Tidwell said senior Jeremy Young played great on defense and made several tackles in the backfield. The Valiants will return to action at Goddard Field next week when they host Fullington Academy for homecoming.
