It is a story that fables are made of. It’s the bedtime story that you will one day tell your children.
It is Valdosta versus the world to be officially dubbed TitleTown, and it’s a long shot. But as the tortoise vs. the hare, and the little engine that could, and David vs. Goliath have taught us, anything is possible.
Especially when you are the little guy, and Valdosta is definitely that.
By name alone, Valdosta is a long shot, but on paper the small South Georgia city stacks up against the rest. So don’t give up hope just yet.
Here is a list of the other TitleTown nominees and what they have to offer compared to Valdosta so you can judge for yourself.
Ann Arbor, MI – University of Michigan has 11 football national titles and 42 Big Ten titles. They also have one basketball national title, nine hockey national titles, two baseball national titles, and 18 swimming and diving national titles.
Boston, Mass. – The Celtics have 16 NBA titles, eight in a row, and 19 conference titles. The Red Sox have seven World Series titles and 12 AL pennants. The New England Patriots have four Super Bowl titles. Boston University has 28 Beanpot titles and four national hockey titles. Boston College also has four national hockey titles.
Chapel Hill, NC – University of North Carolina boasts 19 women’s soccer national championships, five men’s basketball, one women’s basketball, five field hockey, and four men’s lacrosse. Home of arguably the best NBA player ever, Michael Jordan.
Chicago, IL – The Bears have nine football national championships, the Bulls have six NBA titles, and the Blackhawks have three Stanley Cups. The White Sox have three World Series titles and the Cubs have two. The University of Loyola has a NCAA basketball national title and University of Chicago has a football national championship.
Columbus, OH – One of only three schools to have won national titles in baseball, men’s basketball, and football.
