VALDOSTA — Valdosta State’s women’s tennis and softball teams, along with Blazer baseball, will all compete in national tournaments this weekend.

Valdosta State’s softball team travels to Huntsville, Ala. to face Alabama-Huntsville in a best two-out-of-three series for the NCAA South Regional Championship and the right to go to the eight-team national tournament in Salem, Va. The games are scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 4:30 p.m., if the third game is necessary. The Lady Blazers split with the Chargers in the only two games they played this season, on April 11 at the VSU Softball Complex. Valdosta State won the first, 4-2, while UAH came back in the second to win 9-4. The teams’ games in Huntsville in March were rained out.

Lady Blazer tennis travels to Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. (near Orlando) this weekend for nationals. There are only 16 Division II women’s tennis teams left. Valdosta State will begin the tournament against Northwood at 4 p.m. Wednesday. If the Lady Blazers win, they will face the winner of Montana State-Billings and Hawaii Pacific at 1 p.m. Thursday in the national quarterfinals. If VSU wins its quarterfinal match, the team will compete at 1 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The Lady Blazers have already beaten Hawaii Pacific, 6-3 on March 29, but have yet to face Northwood or Montana State-Billings this season.

Blazer baseball will begin South Regional play against Barry, the Sunshine State Conference champion and the No. 2 seed in the region, at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday. Southern Arkansas will host the tournament as the top seed in the region, while VSU is the seventh seed. The tournament will run through Monday.

Valdosta State fans can follow the baseball, softball and tennis action on www.vstateblazers.com or on Talk 92.1 FM.
