VALDOSTA — For the second time in three years, the Valwood golf team won the GISA Region 3-AA championship Monday at Valdosta Country Club.

“I’m excited and proud of the entire team,” Valwood head coach Mike Patrick said. “To win it against a talented Brookwood team means a lot.”

The Valiants won with a team score of 322. Brookwood finished in second with a 330. Southwest Georgia Academy, Randolph Southern and Tiftarea rounded out the region.

Valwood won the region over Brookwood in 2006 by one stroke, but lost last year to the Warriors by one stroke.

For the third year in a row, Valwood senior Jon Gregory Joseph was the low medalist, shooting a 71. Last year, Joseph, who has signed with Southern Miss, shot a 67, but in much better conditions.

“It was a good day, but a little cold and windy,” Joseph said. “I knew I had to be patient with the sandy greens and just feel my way through the course.

“But to beat our rivals in Brookwood is great. We all stepped up to the plate and knew what we had to do.”

The conditions were rough on the course, with cold weather, strong gusting winds and sand-filled greens, but Joseph and three freshmen pulled through for Valwood.

The other three players whose score counted towards the win were David Hobby, Bradley Bynum and John Williams. Hobby shot an 80, Bynum an 82 and Williams an 89.

Joseph, Hobby, and Bynum all made the 3-AA All-Region team.

“With the windy conditions and sandy greens, playing today was really tough,” Hobby said. “The wind made it extra difficult to hit the greens, and it took a total team effort to win today.”

The other three All-Region players came from Brookwood. Tyler Rawlings, who shot the second lowest score with a 77, Hinson Arwood (81) and Scott Cheney (85) made up the rest of the All-Region team.

“The conditions were really tough to play in,” said Rawlings. “Had it not been windy, the scores could have been significantly lower.”

The other golfers on Valwood’s 3-AA championship team are: Will Miller, Zac Henry, Travis Colwell, Kelsey Rasmussen, Rhett Fender and Adam Rassatt. The assistant coaches are Tom Eutzler and Alfred Hires.

“I really want to thank the Valdosta Country Club, athletic director Brett Martin and the parents for all the support we had today that made this possible,” Patrick said.
