- Brooks County offensive guard Tommy Wilfork (61) and quarterback Jeramie Cody (18) competed in the Florida-Georgia Border Wars football game. Cody was chosen the offensive MVP after rushing for over 100 yards for Team Georgia.
QUITMAN — Jeramie Cody wrapped up a very good high school football career with an MVP award in a postseason all-star game.
Cody, Brooks County’s standout quarterback, was chosen the offensive Most Valuable Player at the inaugural Florida-Georgia Border Wars football game, played in Kingsland at Camden County’s Chris Gilman Stadium
Cody rushed for over 100 yards for Team Georgia in the game.
“I was very proud to win it,” Cody said. “I was excited.”
“Any time the Georgia team had any movement, it was when Cody was the quarterback,” said Brooks County head coach Maurice Freeman, who traveled to Kingsland to watch his quarterback play. “He made good reads on the wing-T and led their offense. They ran the wing-T and the Wildcat, and he looked good in both offenses.”
The Florida/Georgia Border Wars matched a team of players from southeastern Georgia against a team of players from the Jacksonville area.
Cody thrived this season as the quarterback in Freeman’s option offense. He rushed for 1,162 yards and 17 touchdowns on 175 carries (6.6 yards per carry), and passed for 665 yards and two touchdowns. He was the first-team All-Region quarterback for Region 1-AA.
Cody also led his team to a 12-2 record and a state semifinals appearance, Brooks’ first since 1994.
“He made our offense run,” Freeman said. “He’s a very talented young man. I’m glad he was my quarterback. He did a good job for us.”
“We had a good season,” Cody said. “I was proud of the team. We made it to the semifinals. I enjoyed it.”
Freeman hopes that Cody’s showing in the Border Wars will help earn him a chance to play football at the next level.
“He’s good enough to play college football as an athlete. Whatever a team’s needs are — quarterback, running back, receiver, defensive back — Cody can play there,” Freeman said.
Cody is also a good student, with a 3.2 GPA.
One of Cody’s linemen, left guard Tommy Wilfork, also played in the game. Wilfork was an All-Region player for the Trojans as well.
“He was a real good guard for us, and a good one in the (Border Wars), too,” Freeman said. “He blocked well.”
“I enjoyed playing in the game with Tommy,” Cody said.
Freeman says Wilfork is considering walking on at Albany State. He also says both Cody and Wilfork are going to be hard to replace next season.
