  • VSU hosts 2013 Parents Weekend, Sept. 20-21

    Valdosta State University will host its 2012 Parents Weekend on Sept. 20 and 21.
    Check-in will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by games in the Union Station, a dinner at Bas Bleu Brasserie with live entertainment from VSU students and professional singers, and then a showing of “Man of Steel” in the Student Union Theater.

    A self-described “lab rat,” Gregory A. Jackson, 22, spent the summer tucked away inside his home away from home, the Valdosta State University Hugh C. Bailey Science Center. The senior chemistry major from Covington helped develop a collection of science experiments for an upcoming public school road show and also conducted research into the use of copper to treat tuberculosis and, possibly, cancer.

    In May of 2012, Valdosta State University’s Ruby R. Sullivan Literacy Center kicked off a campaign to inspire children of all ages to want to read for fun. Fifteen months later, the Ruby R. Sullivan Literacy Center reached its goal. In fact, it surpassed its goal by more than 5 percent, placing the names of 10,500-plus devoted readers from around the world on the walls of the Dr. D., I READ! Hall of Fame.

  • VSU Students study fungi in Ireland

    Dr. Emily Cantonwine, professor of mycology and plant pathology at Valdosta State University, studies fungal diseases and methods for control. Her findings can be used to determine fungicide effectiveness and to reduce disease development.

    Leaving his hometown of Savannah behind, E. Chad Lawson, 20, arrived at Valdosta State University in August 2011 with a desire to study computer information systems and a passion for photography. No one knew about his artistic talents or his desire to use those talents to help others. As far as anyone was really concerned, he was merely a freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
