VHS State Literary Competition winners announced

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta High School Boy's Quartet won first place at the state literary competition in Warner Robins on Saturday, March 16, at Northside High School. Students Dexter Sharper, Josh Sharper, Dylan Sharper and Antonio Hall were excited after hearing the 2nd and 3rd place schools announced and because they knew that they would be named the State Champs for Boy's Quartet.

Also placing at the state level were Lorna Chitty in 4th place for Girl's Extemporaneous Speaking who drew the speech topic of "tanning beds" and Hannah Findlay in 2nd place for Girl's Dramatic Interpretation. VHS is very proud of these fine arts programs and the excellence of representing Valdosta City Schools at the state level against other region winners around the state.

The State Literary Competition is a GHSA sponsored event where 1st place winners from each region compete against winners in their division. These students competed against other AAAAAA schools.

    Valdosta State University hosted representatives from WuFung University as part of a continued partnership to provide study opportunities for criminal justice majors. Dr.Jack  Lee, WuFung University vice president, and Grace Lee, chairperson of the WuFung Board of Trustees, visited Valdosta State April 16-17 and toured thecampus, including residence halls, classrooms, and laboratories.

    A good pipeline system is key in many industries, including gas, petroleum, and pulp and paper.  Pipeline corrosion can compromise the integrity and safety of proper transporting of goods and result in the loss of millions of dollars in engineering structures that are made with steel. With this in mind, students in Valdosta State University’s Engineering Studies Program have explored factors that lead to the corrosion of steel used in the pipeline industry.

    Valdosta State University welcomes artist, speaker, and documentary star Dan Keplinger to campus April 21-24. Over the course of four days, he will lead a series of printmaking sessions, conduct screenings of his Academy Award-winning film “King Gimp,” and speak at the annual Valdosta Mayor’s Council for Persons with Disabilities banquet.

    The Valdosta State University Mass Choir will hold its annual spring concert in Jennett Hall at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12. The theme of this year’s concert is “It’s a New Season” and features various selections from the mass choir. The event also features gospel choir Kevin Lemons and Higher Calling.
