Rant & Rave for Monday, Oct. 21, 2013

- — I agree with the ranter about the new Williams Street sidewalk. It looks like they were made for an elephant to walk down because they are so wide. I also heard they are making the new paved Williams Street one-way. Have our city engineers lost their minds? Have they ever watched the traffic there? One-way will never work but there is no going back because of the elephant sidewalks. This was really a bad decision.

Wednesday evening, Congressman Scott and Congressman Kingston voted "Nay" to fully fund the federal government and to increase the debt ceiling to avoid U.S. government default. Remember this during the 2014 Republican primaries and  in the November 2014 General Election. Remember!

My spouse and I have always been responsible tax paying citizens who carried health, life, and car insurance for our family. Due to the Affordable Care Act, we are now forced to cancel our existing health care coverage because our premiums are going up over 70 percent as of January 2014. We have an extremely high out of pocket cost, as it is in addition to our already high premiums. Everything we have done medically is paid for out of pocket. How is this policy helping the middle class?

I agree people should not put on makeup while driving. One woman doing just that distracted me so much that I picked up my iPod instead of my phone to try to send a text.

Don't want your tax dollars paying for food stamps, Medicaid or whatever poor folks need? Fine, then I don't want my tax dollars paying for industrial parks, farm subsidies, big business incentives and other corporate welfare that only create poor folk wages. Deal?

If you read up on ACA/Obamacare, you'll find that taxpayers aren't paying anything different for the subsidies people are receiving. Those funds came from other program cuts or alterations.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.

The Swiss issue all adult men a firearm. Owning a gun does not condone, or create, violence. Lay blame on the person not the tool. If you really believe that banning firearms will end the violence you are sadly misled. All that will happen is law abiding people will not have guns and the criminal (who doesn't obey the law anyway) will.

I don't know of any gun owners who fantasize about being "the good guy with a gun." Just when you think you have heard the most ignorant statement possible, along comes one that tops them all.
