Rant & Raves for Thursday, May 16, 2013

VALDOSTA — The CRCTs are over. If schools are not going to continue to teach and just give my kids busy work and watch movies, then let their summer vacation start early and save our tax money. Good job to the teachers who are doing the extra step to teach my kids. I truly appreciate you!

So, another bank failure in town? When will those who were responsible for the PAB failure be held accountable? That failure resulted in a huge loss of over $200 million to the U.S. Treasury. Any other individual who brought such a loss to a bank or the Treasury would be in in jail by now.

I love my hometown grocery store, The Crazy Grocer, in Morven. Great meats, great deals and great customer service. Thank you, Tom, for the support you give to our community and bringing us back together. May God bless you.

I want to rave about Mrs. Padgett and Mrs. Craven, teachers at Hahira Elementary School. They took 80 4th and 5th grade students and put on their end-of-the-year choir program. It was truly fantastic and all  the students did a wonderful job in their singing, dancing, etc. They all knew exactly where they should be and everything was well organized.

Thanks to the geniuses that voted down SPLOST so we could get a TitleMax instead of Starbucks at 5 Points. Way to go!

Thank you, Mayor Darsey, for the job you've done in the City of Lakeland with all of its improvements. Sadly, small-town politics and personal interests have you in its crosshairs right now, but please know that you're appreciated by those of us that choose facts over ignorance.

A big rave to the VDT who posted both sides of the equality argument. It's nice to know that even in a place filled with so many closed-minded individuals, the paper can remain neutral. Way to go!

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.
