Rant & Raves for Wednesday, January 9, 2012

VALDOSTA — Editor’s Note: Due to popular demand, every Wednesday in 2013 will be an all-rave column, with no rants.

How wonderful and encouraging it has been to read the increased number of “raves” in the VDT! It’s a new year with lots of government and personal uncertainty ahead. Why don’t we vow as a community to lift each other up? Let’s rave, rave, rave and become known as the town/community who stays focused on the positive? Come on ... accept the challenge!

Kudos to Bubba Jax Seafood located on West Hill Avenue (formally Old South BBQ). If you haven’t been, then you don’t know what you’re missing. It is the best seafood place around. Everything is cooked fresh and it is absolutely delicious. Hats off to Brian Banks and his employees.

Rave to the two men who picked up all of the trash from the Naylor Highway to the Valdosta Highway on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. It looked so good.

As I put away my Christmas decorations, I just want to write and say thank you to the unknown person that created a beautiful Nativity scene on the inside of a gourd. This prized possession was purchased a number of years ago at the Junior Woman’s Club Arts and Crafts Show. It has been my favorite Christmas piece and admired by so many people. Truly, a work of art. Thank you so much.

I want to say thanks to Brittany, “the sweet little cook at Church Street Coffee in Hahira.” She always has a smile and a “Hey y’all,” everytime we walk in the door. The food is excellent and the great customer service adds a cherry on top!

Thanks to the Ray City Police Department for looking out for the kids by going on field trips, riding the roads to make sure no one is speeding, and for being at the daycare school, and visiting the schools.

Is it another sign of the times that people are too lazy to send thank you notes? I’ve bought four wedding gifts and two baby shower gifts since April 1. To date, I've received just one thank you note. It’s just good manners!

It cracks me up when people say they don't want to be in a business or location where people are carrying weapons. My husband is a police officer and when he's off duty, he always carries concealed. I have a strong feeling that you might be happy one day that one of the hundreds of off duty officers are "packing" if you ever have a need for them!

People rant on here, but don't bother to attend the County Commission's meeting about the tax increase. I bet you don't vote either. If not, you forfeit your chance to gripe. Just hush!

Some hillbillies have more money than you do, they just don't flaunt it. Most are hard working, good people, unlike the wealthier, selfish, spoiled, inconsiderate brats. You can lose all your money and education in a blink of an eye. Be thankful God has allowed you to be or have what you do and treat others as you want them to treat you.

Bring back Ronald Reagan, he cut taxes and only raised the federal debt limit 17 times to do it!

It’s a shame to work for someone who gripes all the time. Never a “How are you” or “Thanks for your hard work!”

I think that all facilities owned by the city and county should have signs banning firearms in the buildings. I don’t feel safe if a firearm is there when I am there.

There are some wealthy physicians, business owners in this town who target only certain demographics for their business, and reject competition and growth. With the new statistics of a shrinking Valdosta, I hope you and your selfishness are quite happy when your comfort zone disappears!

Chaining a dog 24/7 is nothing short of animal cruelty. It is time for our elected officials to pass a law against it.

Just announced in Atlanta that Valdosta came in first in the state for percent decrease in population for year 2013. Albany was No. 4. Do you suppose the City School System demographics have anything to do with this. City folks may not think consolidation was so stupid when we start playing in region A.
