Rant & Rave for Monday, April 21, 2014

-- — I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

Like the ranter wondering when we’ll hear something from the Chamber of Commerce about the sewage spills all over town, I’ve been wondering the same thing. When I moved to this area in 2006, I noticed the CofC was all over the news every week. I’d never seen such an active bunch. Now when there is a real serious problem, they are nowhere to be found.

The most frustrating aspect of Sewagegate is that city leaders and management have never admitted doing anything to create the problem. Not even just poor judgment over many years. Transferring a million dollars a year out of the water and sewer fund. Not allocating more SPLOST Funds for six SPLOST referendums to make upgrades to an obviously aging system. Not even addressing the issues with the first SPLOST VII referendum. If all of that does not demonstrate poor judgment and leadership then what does?

The arrogance and audacity of VSU students crossing at Baytree and Oak Street is mind boggling. People in college do not have a clue about crossing a street? Sad, to say the least. It’s just a matter of time before another student gets killed in an accident and it will not be the driver’s fault. A car going as slow as five miles an hour can kill.

Congratulations to Trinity Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir, instrumentalists and soloists for the beautiful performance of the John Rutter “Requiem” on Palm Sunday. It was truly a magnificent performance. Thank you for presenting quality music to our community. The young ladies from St. John Catholic Youth Choir were excellent. Thank you, Dr. Johnson and the Trinity Choir.

A big rave to Dr. Ed Mark and his office staff and SGMC and their staff in the Spine Center. My recent experience was awesome, from intake to discharge. The nurses were great, post-op nurse was amazing and the anesthesiologists great. This area is so lucky to have a man of Dr. Mark’s enormous talent and a number one ranked spine center.

To the ranter about the A/C in the jails, you are 100 percent right. The male and females should be treated equal. Neither side should have any A/C. If I am struggling to put gas in the car to get to work to put food on my family’s table and not running our A/C to keep down our living cost then why should those parasites get their three squares a day, cable TV and A/C? Put them in tents and pink outfits and feed them PB&J that comes out of their own funds. Yes, just like Sheriff Joe out in Arizona.

It seems people in this town, and especially those in my church are not happy unless they are complaining about something. Today’s earth-shaking rant is that the choir members are too noisy when they change into their robes before the Mass. Give it a rest or you won’t have a choir.

Funny, the people criticizing immigrants coming here looking for a better life for their family, are only here because their ancestors immigrated here for a better life for their family.

Of the proposed 75 million that is needed to teach the students of Lowndes County for one school year, 55 million of that goes towards salaries. I don't want to hear no complaints about teachers salaries or furloughs again.

Is it another sign of the times that people are too lazy to send thank you notes? I’ve bought four wedding gifts and two baby shower gifts since April 1. To date, I've received just one thank you note. It’s just good manners!

It cracks me up when people say they don't want to be in a business or location where people are carrying weapons. My husband is a police officer and when he's off duty, he always carries concealed. I have a strong feeling that you might be happy one day that one of the hundreds of off duty officers are "packing" if you ever have a need for them!

People rant on here, but don't bother to attend the County Commission's meeting about the tax increase. I bet you don't vote either. If not, you forfeit your chance to gripe. Just hush!

Some hillbillies have more money than you do, they just don't flaunt it. Most are hard working, good people, unlike the wealthier, selfish, spoiled, inconsiderate brats. You can lose all your money and education in a blink of an eye. Be thankful God has allowed you to be or have what you do and treat others as you want them to treat you.

Bring back Ronald Reagan, he cut taxes and only raised the federal debt limit 17 times to do it!

It’s a shame to work for someone who gripes all the time. Never a “How are you” or “Thanks for your hard work!”
