VALDOSTA — I really enjoyed the article in the July 4th issue about the early leaders of our nation. I only wish we had leaders of that caliber today.

As a newcomer to Valdosta, I was very disappointed with the July 4 fireworks. After sitting for two hours in the parking lot, what we saw was 20 minutes of fireworks that was unimpressive to say the least. There were no reactions from the crowd. The expected finale never occurred. The show just fizzled out.  Surely the people in charge of this highly anticipated event can come up with a better show, especially the finale.

To the person who thinks soccer is boring, you should try cricket, where after five days play in international matches the result is often a draw!

Valdosta has two football stadiums, the VSU PE Complex, and a YMCA sports park, so what is the problem with building a new facility designated for soccer? Often when I read Rant & Rave, I shake my head at the viciousness and sarcasm of the comments. But to the ranter who said he/she would rather see paint dry, your ugly statement is a new low for Rant & Rave.

Entitled people can manufacture, run a grow house, distribute marijuana, possess a gram of cocaine, and receive a fine and suspended sentence, while the poor and minorities get decades in prison for a dime bag of weed.

Please, enough with the rants about the old mill. Unless you stepped up with financial support or could do anything to change either the economy or the price the owners were asking, then you have no say in the matter! And why all the complaining now? Where were you during the many years the mill sat crumbling? Was it not important then?

Never seen so many blue light specials. Every single time I’m on I-75’s exits 18-49. Would be interesting to know if the hard work of Lowndes and Cook County’s finest has brought a significant drop in the number of accidents?

How in the world could any pastor allow men to play on their church softball teams at Freedom Park and almost the whole team doesn’t go to church there or anywhere? Isn’t that against the rules?

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.
