VALDOSTA — Watching the audience’s standing ovation after the president demanded employers “give America a raise” reminded me of some of the old German films of Hitler addressing the faithful. The raise requires profits; government taxes and regulations drain profits and are the biggest impediments to profits and hence employment. He promised a $10.10 salary requirement for all government workers and contractors. This is a legislative act reserved for the Congress. Milton Freidman, Nobel Prize winning economist said: “the most anti-black law on the books is this land’s minimum wage law”. He understood that minimum wages eliminate those who cannot meet the minimum production required to justify the salary. Entry level jobs are the first to go.

Good ol’ Valdosta! Not only is this the litter capital of the world, we are now the wimps of the south over a bit of cold weather. You don't have to be Willard Scott to know the ground temperatures were never cold enough to freeze to the point of pushing the panic button.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that Georgia Military College is requiring that their students attend night classes when every other school in Valdosta and surrounding counties have canceled. Shame on them for not looking out for the safety of their students.

Someone needs to address our local Georgia Department of Labor response referrals. I sent off for three referrals on Monday, here it is Thursday and no responses. Either someone is extremely slow, or only sending out referrals to specific people.

After spending much time researching digital antennas, I chose to make my purchase online. A multi directional, not omni directional, antenna that advertised a reach of over 100 miles for less than $100.

Thanks to the employers who thought of their employees' safety when making the decision to close for business during the bad weather. You understand that your employees can't do their job if they are sick or hurt, and keeping safety in mind was the right call.

The President has said that smoking marijuana is no more dangerous than drinking alcohol. The main difference is that you can stand in crowded place with drinkers and not get intoxicated. Stand in a crowded room with those smoking marijuana and see what happens. Where's the dedicated driver here?

Estimated that 10 percent of the U.S. population are career crooks, caught and not caught. Crime is the most logical career choice, all things considered. Because our governments (politicians) and their cronies have jiggled all systems to promote crime. That’s how 10 percent puts such fear in 90 percent. Causing great expense in security and causing the great self-defense gun debate.

I am very disappointed  with our commissioners who voted for this tax hike for Lowndes County. We voted for the SPLOST with an understanding we would not get a tax hike. Liar, liar, pants on fire, is what my mother used to say.

Here’s an idea. Learn basic math before posting numbers about crime rates. The US has 1 violent crime for every 26 citizens not 1 per 262. Geesh.

To the ranter about the A/C in the jails, you are 100 percent right. The male and females should be treated equal. Neither side should have any A/C. If I am struggling to put gas in the car to get to work to put food on my family’s table and not running our A/C to keep down our living cost then why should those parasites get their three squares a day, cable TV and A/C? Put them in tents and pink outfits and feed them PB&J that comes out of their own funds. Yes, just like Sheriff Joe out in Arizona.

It seems people in this town, and especially those in my church are not happy unless they are complaining about something. Today’s earth-shaking rant is that the choir members are too noisy when they change into their robes before the Mass. Give it a rest or you won’t have a choir.

Funny, the people criticizing immigrants coming here looking for a better life for their family, are only here because their ancestors immigrated here for a better life for their family.

Of the proposed 75 million that is needed to teach the students of Lowndes County for one school year, 55 million of that goes towards salaries. I don't want to hear no complaints about teachers salaries or furloughs again.

Is it another sign of the times that people are too lazy to send thank you notes? I’ve bought four wedding gifts and two baby shower gifts since April 1. To date, I've received just one thank you note. It’s just good manners!

It cracks me up when people say they don't want to be in a business or location where people are carrying weapons. My husband is a police officer and when he's off duty, he always carries concealed. I have a strong feeling that you might be happy one day that one of the hundreds of off duty officers are "packing" if you ever have a need for them!

People rant on here, but don't bother to attend the County Commission's meeting about the tax increase. I bet you don't vote either. If not, you forfeit your chance to gripe. Just hush!
