Rants & Raves for Thursday, October 17, 2013

VALDOSTA — Congratulations and kudos to Phyllis Childree and LHS Drama for putting on “The Marvelous Wonderettes.” It was a “marvelous” stellar production. And thumbs down to LHS Board of Education and LHS Administration for your lack of presence or support, or providing air conditioning, adequately lighted restroom facilities, or outside safety lighting Saturday night.

Who in the world came up with the big sidewalk idea on Williams Street? I thought they were just fixing sewer lines or something. Too bad they are taking a once nice street to drive down and screwing it up. We need more traffic slowdowns — not!

For all those wishing for “the good old days,” be careful what you wish for. Do you really want to earn what one did 75 years ago, when bread was so cheap? Do you want to go back to living without indoor plumbing, no electricity, and one-room schools? With progress comes problems; but many wonderful things come too.

To the name-calling ranter accusing folks of racism if they don't like Obamacare, do your homework. There are numerous health-care plans available for a third the cost of Obamacare with the same benefits. Check the Internet. Plans have been available for some time.

When this country was invaded, nobody on either side expected the standing governments (Indians) to welcome them and enable them by giving them welfare. Instead the standing governments (Indians) fought invaders. Nobody berated them for fighting back. Today we are invaded daily and berated for fighting back. The standing governments expect us to enable invaders.

So many people have Mediacom phone service; why don’t they put out a phone book?

To the ranter on Oct. 15 who asked if there were any questions. Are you that insecure about your own beliefs that you have to insult someone’s education? People can disagree on how local and country governments should be run and have intelligent conversations without being insulting. This is how the country has gotten into the current mess; there are not enough useful discussions and negotiations.

I think that a less stressful environment like the Spice of Life is a great place for an interview if you can manage a little privacy. I was interviewed for a job in a booth at the Wooden Nickel back in the ’80s and still have the job. Worked out well.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.

The Swiss issue all adult men a firearm. Owning a gun does not condone, or create, violence. Lay blame on the person not the tool. If you really believe that banning firearms will end the violence you are sadly misled. All that will happen is law abiding people will not have guns and the criminal (who doesn't obey the law anyway) will.
