Rant & Rave for Tuesday, April 2, 2013

-- — Is the so called ‘sequestration’ about sensible budget cuts? True there are no more White House tours but what about the upcoming big bash for Michelle Obamas 50th. Birthday for which Beyonce and Adele were reportedly booked to perform? Has that been canceled?

Raves to the Gingerbread Players of Theatre Guild Valdosta in their awesome performance of ‘James and the Giant Peach.’ Great job to the cast and all those behind the scene too. My 5 year old daughter and I had a blast and can’t wait for the next performance!

Person complaining about the yellow church van: You should make yourself better understood. In this first rant, you clearly stated how they came by at different times, so you never knew when they'd be around and couldn't stand there all day waiting. Then you say how small children can't chase down a van, in your second post. Why in the world are small children chasing down a moving vehicle? But the main point is the van is there giving away free meals. Quit trying to find something to complain about. Some people are never satisfied.

I thought the reason we sent our children to Valwood was for the education so they are ready for college when they graduate. If I was worried about who won the football game, I would have sent them to Lowndes! Let's not forget the main reason they are there.

The Downtown housing project the city approved last week, help me understand; the property owner puts up $170,000 on a $1.77 million dollar project, the City borrows the money that the $500 thousand from the two taxpayer funded grants don’t cover. Does the city pay back the loans or does the owner? Why is the City helping someone develop property with grants and loans? There is scads of retail and residential space available downtown and elsewhere and seven or eight  pages of repos every week in the paper.

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.
