The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — The governor and his justice reform council as well as the federal government, worked to release people from prison and county jails, going below the minimum sentence guidelines, to save taxpayers the burden of housing these people. But probation here in Lowndes County fills the jail to capacity and over, sticking it to the taxpayers again. Read the paper. It's not hardly a day that goes by, someone is arrested for probation violation. What's wrong with this picture?

Here's an idea. Maybe that person trying to get around you on the interstate has an emergency he's trying to get to. So quit playing games, speeding up and slowing down, trying to keep him from passing you on the right. Normally, no, you shouldn't but maybe, just maybe, that person is trying to get to a sick child, a loved one who's been rushed to the hospital. Ever think of that?

The Valdosta Industrial Authority seems to have home-grown management with limited connections outside the area. In order to attract business it needs experienced business people with broader networks, outside the state and  even the country.

What has happened to Valdosta? It has went from a nice place to live to a nasty smoky place, everybody burning trash in their yards. I live in a subdivision in the county, and there is always someone smoking up the neighborhood. The whole city and county just stinks. Clean it up, Valdosta. How about no burning in your yards if you have neighbors?

If Lowndes wanted to take students to a warm, tropical climate, for a lot less money then $2,000, I suggest Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands. They are within a couple of hours flight time; no passport needed, and about one-fourth the cost. Looks like some adults want an excuse to go to Hawaii!

To the one saying that HB-875 would allow "virtually anyone" to carry a gun. Evidently you haven't researched Georgia's carry laws. In order to carry a firearm, you must obtain a permit which requires a background check. This bill simply adds more protection to those who legally own a gun.

Wake up, people. If they go up on minimum wage, everything else goes up such as products, produce, you pay more on sales tax and puts you in a  higher tax bracket. It will give the government more money to waste.

We should rename Valdosta to the City of Red Lights. Couldn’t we have some of these lights flashing  after hours. They are everywhere a creek trail crosses the road.
