Rant & Raves for Thursday, March 14, 2013

VALDOSTA — The “sewergate” is an old crisis that has been ignored by city management and the newspaper. The issue is more taxes, last year the library and auditorium was the hype to sell the SPLOST tax; this year it is the wastewater treatment plant. The city has had 27 years of SPLOST taxes, over $270 million spent, why has the old crisis not been dealt with? A new treatment plant will not correct the numerous locations where the poorly designed system frequently overflows.

A question for other area professionals: Accounts, do you pack up your W2s and calculators to take home at the end of the day? Doctors, do you pack up your syringes and stethoscopes to take home after surgery? Educators should not be asked to pack and take home our teaching supplies.

How the Lord must have wept when His beautiful creation was soiled by human waste. How disappointed He must be when we care more about casting blame, than doing everything humanly possible to fix our problems.

Applause? Really? If the city thinks the VDT was out-of-line (kudos, by the way! Kudos to Jason!), wait until the national news gets a whiff!

I don’t live in the City of Valdosta but the business I work for is located in Valdosta. Each month the business pays a stormwater fee on our water bill. This is in addition to the regular sewer usage fee. It seems to me that all the recent sewage problems were caused by storm water. What has Valdosta been doing with this stormwater fee?

Thanks, Valdosta Daily Times staff and editors! Without you the public would have no knowledge of the severity of the problems at the Withlacoochee Wastewater Treatment Plant. Thanks for keeping us informed. Please continue to do so with this issue and others.

I am very disappointed  with our commissioners who voted for this tax hike for Lowndes County. We voted for the SPLOST with an understanding we would not get a tax hike. Liar, liar, pants on fire, is what my mother used to say.

Here’s an idea. Learn basic math before posting numbers about crime rates. The US has 1 violent crime for every 26 citizens not 1 per 262. Geesh.

To the ranter about the A/C in the jails, you are 100 percent right. The male and females should be treated equal. Neither side should have any A/C. If I am struggling to put gas in the car to get to work to put food on my family’s table and not running our A/C to keep down our living cost then why should those parasites get their three squares a day, cable TV and A/C? Put them in tents and pink outfits and feed them PB&J that comes out of their own funds. Yes, just like Sheriff Joe out in Arizona.

It seems people in this town, and especially those in my church are not happy unless they are complaining about something. Today’s earth-shaking rant is that the choir members are too noisy when they change into their robes before the Mass. Give it a rest or you won’t have a choir.

Funny, the people criticizing immigrants coming here looking for a better life for their family, are only here because their ancestors immigrated here for a better life for their family.

Of the proposed 75 million that is needed to teach the students of Lowndes County for one school year, 55 million of that goes towards salaries. I don't want to hear no complaints about teachers salaries or furloughs again.

Is it another sign of the times that people are too lazy to send thank you notes? I’ve bought four wedding gifts and two baby shower gifts since April 1. To date, I've received just one thank you note. It’s just good manners!

It cracks me up when people say they don't want to be in a business or location where people are carrying weapons. My husband is a police officer and when he's off duty, he always carries concealed. I have a strong feeling that you might be happy one day that one of the hundreds of off duty officers are "packing" if you ever have a need for them!

People rant on here, but don't bother to attend the County Commission's meeting about the tax increase. I bet you don't vote either. If not, you forfeit your chance to gripe. Just hush!

Some hillbillies have more money than you do, they just don't flaunt it. Most are hard working, good people, unlike the wealthier, selfish, spoiled, inconsiderate brats. You can lose all your money and education in a blink of an eye. Be thankful God has allowed you to be or have what you do and treat others as you want them to treat you.
