Rants & Raves for Wednesday, July 3, 2013

VALDOSTA — Editor’s Note: In 2013, Wednesdays will be  rave-only days. Thank you to our readers for your support.

I would like to acknowledge two workers with Advanced Disposal, Larry and Monte. They both are very courteous, friendly and helpful. Very good people.

I think we have a wonderful mayor in John Gayle. He is always available, works hard, and has the interest of the people of Valdosta foremost in his mind and actions. He is honest and has great respect in the community. A man of integrity. If you can’t work with him, it’s your own fault. He has followed in the steps of his father, Jack Gayle, a deacon and great Christian man.

Thank you to whoever is doing the sunflowers on Bemiss Road. They really are pretty.

Congratulations to Don Griffin on his retirement from Moody Air Force Base after 49 years of civil service. Very few people can claim such as this and we know Don will be missed!

Thank you to Abundant Life Church of God for the fantastic Vacation Bible School held last week. The children were fed spiritually as well as physically. The Bible lessons combined with music and handcrafts were incorporated to complete the process. Also, the week ended with recreational activities on Saturday and a cook out.

A huge thank you to the city work crews on Northfield Road. They repaired driveway connections and put down sod and watered it. Our whole neighborhood looks better. We appreciate you.

A huge rave for Kristyn at Publix on Gornto. She has excellent job skills, outstanding personality and wonderful customer relations. We do have some good young people. I am positive she will do great things with her future career. Her parents should be proud of such a great young lady.

Dr. Chiang in Valdosta is a fantastic doctor. His staff is very professional, friendly, and efficient. Some other doctors’ offices could take a few pointers as to how to treat a sick patient.

I had the pleasure  of watching “The Sound of Music” Wednesday and cannot say enough good things about the performance of all the actors, and our local kids were wonderful.

The “House of Heroes” workers would like to say thanks to Mrs. Baxley and “The Cook” for the wonderful lunch you prepared for all of us on Tuesday, at your home. We enjoyed spending time with you, your friends, and pets.

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.

The Swiss issue all adult men a firearm. Owning a gun does not condone, or create, violence. Lay blame on the person not the tool. If you really believe that banning firearms will end the violence you are sadly misled. All that will happen is law abiding people will not have guns and the criminal (who doesn't obey the law anyway) will.

I don't know of any gun owners who fantasize about being "the good guy with a gun." Just when you think you have heard the most ignorant statement possible, along comes one that tops them all.

Monday, I observed a woman at Walmart getting into her car, with two boys around the age of 8, one of which seated a young infant on his own lap in the rear seat, not using his seat belt. As the lady began backing out, I jumped out of my car and asked her to put that baby in a car seat. Stupid! Please, parents, don’t have a kid, if you don’t care to put them in a seat belt, or wear yours.

To all Facebookers: You look like idiots when you post these “dares” of jumping in cold water or pictures without makeup. What do you think you are accomplishing? Absolutely nothing ... Send money to support the organizations and then you will be making a difference.
