Rant and Raves for Friday, Feb. 24, 2012

VALDOSTA — Gas prices are going up for three reasons, none involving Obama: oil companies’ greed, Iran and the Straits of Hormuz, and the refusal of the American people to demand alternative fuel sources.

I’d like to know if I can get front-page coverage. I got fired, let go, downsized after working for a company for over 20 years.

Well, you ask what could Obama do about gas prices, Obama can allow  drilling in the gulf and he can approve the Keystone pipeline.

To anti-Obama gas ranter, the reason gasoline prices are rising is because the oil companies are exporting from the United States. Gasoline is a money-making export for the oil companies. Dollar-wise, it is the biggest export we have.

A big rave to Mr. Aldrich. Thank you for your work in updating our system’s outdated buildings. Thankfully Southeast will be re-built before they rudely usher you out ... How long will your replacement make the “red-headed stepchild” (Newbern) wait for rebuilding?

Wow! That is the first thing that comes to mind about what happened to Mr. Aldrich. I can’t believe that after 43 years the board will not give any examples of what they claim caused his termination. It just goes to show you how kind and respectable Mr. Aldrich is when he said, “it’s really not worth my time or effort to do anything.”

Thank you, Mr. R  (you know who you are), for being the best at what you do. You inspire more people than you will ever realize or know. Thank God for sending you our way.

Some people need to get a grip and not be so lazy and park their car in a space at the Walmart on Norman Drive.

So the Lowndes County dictators or commissioners have decided that our roads would be safer if we shut the doors on establishments selling alcohol at 1:55 a.m. And force them off the property. Lowndes EMS gas ’em up, get ready for this weekend. From 2-3, the roads will be a gauntlet. If it’s not broke, don’t try to fix it. Thanks.

Why are city engineering traffic personnel allowed to drive city trucks home for lunch? That is a misuse of public money.

If the city police department spends a little more time on the Interstate all of the crime near the mall area would stop but instead they let the sheriff do it.

Traffic at Five Points after 5 p.m. is terrible! What is going on?

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.
