Rant & Rave for Friday, Feb. 21, 2014

VALDOSTA — I would like to commend Alyssa that works at Winn Dixie in Lake Park for always being so sweet and pleasant when I go in there. Very sweet young lady. We need more teens like her.

You can write all the editorials that you want, but what the day-to-day employees are told and experience at SGMC relating to their job security and what they tell you are two different things. I am tired of my spouse coming home at least once a week with yet another threat from the higher ups that hours are about to get cut. Employees have made all kinds of suggestions on how to help save money, but they all get shot down.

I vote that no more crackpot comments be allowed here regarding marijuana legalization. Too much ignorance and misinformation.

Why is someone being allowed to speak on leadership, etc....who sat on a bank board of directions that failed, resulting in over a $200 million loss to the FDIC and US Treasury, shareholder loss , and employee job loss? Is there no shame? Wow.

While in my father's hospital room in the Dasher Heart Center, I saw a young family bringing a small flower arrangement in. They walked past the nurse's station, where there were half a dozen nurses gossiping about one of their mothers-in-law. Suddenly, every single nurse started hollering out to them. There was no excuse me, pardon me, none of that. Rules said that they couldn't take flowers in. The man asked why, since there were no notices anywhere, and the only reason they were given was "because." The family was polite, though unhappy, and a more polite male nurse came and explained it to them. After they continued on, the nurses went back to gossiping, rolling their eyes, saying how they should have "just known." It was extremely rude, especially since they were just trying to bring their loved one something to cheer him up.

How in the world could any pastor allow men to play on their church softball teams at Freedom Park and almost the whole team doesn’t go to church there or anywhere? Isn’t that against the rules?

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.
