Rants & Raves

for Thursday, May 15, 2014

VALDOSTA — Can we please stop with the empty “don’t we have more important things to worry about” argument? First, it’s a free country and people can worry about whatever they like. Second, as difficult as it may be for some to believe, most people have the intellectual wherewithal to “worry about” multiple issues at the same time.

A big rave to South Georgia Medical Center for the free skin cancer screening last Thursday. Thank you so much for it and all you do for the community!

I really can’t get comfortable about advanced voting. Just as soon as I vote, some politician I voted for will get caught doing something illegal, immoral, or fattening and I’ll feel like a fool.

The purpose of carrying a gun is to be prepared. Hopefully, nothing ever happens to require it to be drawn, but if it does, you’ll be glad you had it.

A Great Big Thank You to the young guy at Communications Plus in Nashville who helped my 86-year-old mother with her cell phone a week or so ago. It took patience, but his caring heart and smiling face made our visit very pleasant. He was very eager to help us in every possible way he could. ...

I really enjoyed the “actions speak louder than words” piece! Thank you for sharing that. Eighty-six tons of food is wonderful news. You’re right — so much better than all the negativity.

Unless you actually own a radar gun, is it possible that the “Advanced waste” truck sounded like it was doing 45? I mean from what I’ve seen mechanically, they probably couldn’t do 45 if they tried.

Congratulations to all of the VSU graduates. However, the seating should have been better controlled by ushers. I arrived 50 minutes early with my elderly mother who can walk, but is handicapped and has very bad balance. People were saving six to 10 seats each in the lower sections and were telling us we couldn’t sit. We had to climb to the upper level for her to watch her granddaughter. I was very afraid she might fall trying to get up and back down. Maybe they should limit saved seats to one extra per person already present.

Too many animal abusers in Valdosta/Lowndes County with pitbulls staked, unexercised and walking in their own excrement deserve the same confinement.

Outstanding job by the Lowndes County Animal Shelter in controlling a potentially dangerous situation. Doing so before state involvement showed professionalism and true caring for the animals.

Estimated that 10 percent of the U.S. population are career crooks, caught and not caught. Crime is the most logical career choice, all things considered. Because our governments (politicians) and their cronies have jiggled all systems to promote crime. That’s how 10 percent puts such fear in 90 percent. Causing great expense in security and causing the great self-defense gun debate.

I am very disappointed  with our commissioners who voted for this tax hike for Lowndes County. We voted for the SPLOST with an understanding we would not get a tax hike. Liar, liar, pants on fire, is what my mother used to say.

Here’s an idea. Learn basic math before posting numbers about crime rates. The US has 1 violent crime for every 26 citizens not 1 per 262. Geesh.

To the ranter about the A/C in the jails, you are 100 percent right. The male and females should be treated equal. Neither side should have any A/C. If I am struggling to put gas in the car to get to work to put food on my family’s table and not running our A/C to keep down our living cost then why should those parasites get their three squares a day, cable TV and A/C? Put them in tents and pink outfits and feed them PB&J that comes out of their own funds. Yes, just like Sheriff Joe out in Arizona.

It seems people in this town, and especially those in my church are not happy unless they are complaining about something. Today’s earth-shaking rant is that the choir members are too noisy when they change into their robes before the Mass. Give it a rest or you won’t have a choir.

Funny, the people criticizing immigrants coming here looking for a better life for their family, are only here because their ancestors immigrated here for a better life for their family.

Of the proposed 75 million that is needed to teach the students of Lowndes County for one school year, 55 million of that goes towards salaries. I don't want to hear no complaints about teachers salaries or furloughs again.

Is it another sign of the times that people are too lazy to send thank you notes? I’ve bought four wedding gifts and two baby shower gifts since April 1. To date, I've received just one thank you note. It’s just good manners!

It cracks me up when people say they don't want to be in a business or location where people are carrying weapons. My husband is a police officer and when he's off duty, he always carries concealed. I have a strong feeling that you might be happy one day that one of the hundreds of off duty officers are "packing" if you ever have a need for them!

People rant on here, but don't bother to attend the County Commission's meeting about the tax increase. I bet you don't vote either. If not, you forfeit your chance to gripe. Just hush!
