Raves for Wednesday, August 7, 2013

VALDOSTA — Editor’s Note: In 2013, Wednesdays will be  rave-only days. Thank you to our readers for your support.

As an employee of SGMC, I'm thankful to have a job and good benefits unlike those who worked for one of the many hospitals that were forced to close their doors in 2013. Just a few: Long Island College Hospital, Lakeside Memorial Hospital, Earl K. Long Medical Center, and closer to home Calhoun Memorial Hospital. I bet the employees of those facilities would gladly sacrifice some benefits to maintain employment.

I would like to rave about Steve at Zacadoo's on Inner Perimeter. He is always so nice and makes you feel like he really appreciates you coming by. This is why I am a regular! Great job, Steve, we appreciate you!

Just a quick thank you to all the volunteer firemen. Knowing that while you have families at home you still respond to even the most insignificant calls ensuring the safety of others. Because of what you do those of us in the county are safer.

Big RAVE to the people that work at Waffle House at 5 Points. My daughter and I stopped there the other night when we were in Valdosta after a long day of doctor appointments. The people  were so kind to us.

Thanks to the Valdosta Fire Department for coming out to my home and installing three smoke detectors and taking the time to talk to us about them. My family really appreciates it.

I would like to thank Lorrie at Valdosta Medical Clinic for helping me with my account. She was very kind, understanding and professional.

I'm with you on the Animal Shelter. Just got the most precious little rat terrier and all it cost was $105. Saved her life and she brought joy to ours! You'll never meet nicer people than the ones that volunteer their time to the shelter. Please support the shelter!

How in the world could any pastor allow men to play on their church softball teams at Freedom Park and almost the whole team doesn’t go to church there or anywhere? Isn’t that against the rules?

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.
