Rant & Raves for Friday, August 2, 2013

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — No, you’re not getting SPLOST VII! First you spend millions fighting over it, as to who gets what percent of it. SPLOST I, II, III, IV, V, and VI obviously didn’t go to beef up the existing sewer plant. It went for more government employees, higher wages, bonuses, bigger retirement benefits, insurance, health care, and expensive trips, parties, and longer vacations. You’re just like Washington, D.C.!

Maybe local government should have anticipated these now urgent needs, back when they were building big fancy headquarters for themselves, the Industrial Authority, etc. These needs didn’t seem that urgent a short time ago when they wanted a new library and auditorium.

Whatever happened to the part of expanding Gornto that involved the railroad tracks? I get really tired of the backup caused by someone waiting to turn into the YMCA or Creekside.

The VSU salary adjustments are a slap in the face to all hard-working employees. Faculty that have done nothing for years are being given huge bonuses, while those that earned merit for excellence are penalized. Also, the biggest payouts all go to administration. This is rewarding sloth and punishing ambition. This is an example of government incompetence and greed at its worst.

SGMC needs to clean house from the top down and change this ignorant rut of abusing the loyal employees.

City Council! Who do we clap for and give a big raise and bonus to for the recent release of 7.5 million gallons of raw sewage into the Withlacoochee River? I smell a rat. No, it's the river I smell, I guess. This time the river was only half way up the banks. Has the berm been built back up? I think more rain is on the way. Pray instead.

The current Times poll, "How Do You Read A Book" is interesting and sad at the same time. You can tell by the spelling and grammar in the comments written about articles in the paper, that a lot of folks don't read much.

Why did the Industrial Authority purchase a building for over $500,000, $200,000 over the value on the tax rolls? And then spend even more money to "refurbish" it? Didn’t they have a perfectly good office/location? It’s too bad the local taxpayers get no benefit for all the tax dollars that are pumped into them. There has been no new or significant industry in this area for years now. Why is there even an Industrial Authority? What a big waste of money.
