Rant & Raves for Monday, February 4, 2013

VALDOSTA — Thank you, VDT, for informing the public regarding the pros and cons for VSU's considering NCAA Division I over Division II. Articles are "keepers.” Put that idea to rest, people. Go, Blazers!

I do not understand why the commissioners voted to close the county trash collection center. We were paying for this service. If the county were losing money, they could have charged more. The extra 1 cent that was voted for could have paid some of the cost. The prices that Advance Disposal Trash charges now will increase later on. All the money spent setting up the collection centers is wasted.

I am sorry to see the dumps close. There will now be more dumping on roads and more burning. I pay over $10,000 a year in property taxes and this is the only service that I used. I will vote against every county commissioner in primaries and election until they come back. How much did the new sanitation company contribute to their election fund I wonder?

I've had Deep South Sanitation since the first day Mr. Scarborough introduced himself and his company. They are the best. Lowndes County, let’s keep our economy strong, support your local businessmen and taxpayers, not some big box company who doesn't care about their customers!

A Rave to Lloyd Dumas, VDT circulation manager! I was having problems receiving my daily newspaper and he took care of the problem and then followed up!

All those happy raves on Wednesday give me a headache.

Valdosta High School has a large discrepancy between the high achieving students and the students with disabilities. Is that news? No, that is reality. We all expect that there will be a gap between kids with disabilities and other groups in the high school. No Child Left Behind is a completely misguided notion. 2014 cannot come soon enough!

How in the world could any pastor allow men to play on their church softball teams at Freedom Park and almost the whole team doesn’t go to church there or anywhere? Isn’t that against the rules?

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.
