Rant & Rave for Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013

-- — To those comparing Obama’s executive orders to George Bush, they both are serving or have served two terms and Obama is on course to break Bush’s numbers. Also Bush was an idiot so I guess, at this point, Obama is a lesser idiot.

A garbage franchise is not communism. When garbage companies bid for a franchise, your prices inevitably go down, and it saves from having two or three companies’ trucks out and about. Waste Management had a franchise for all the towns where I moved from and no one ever mentioned the word communism or minded coming into the 21st century and having their trash picked up.

Do you want to know how to get rid of a longtime, loyal employee? This is a rant for those who would “retire” an employee by not giving a paycheck and advising him that he’s finished. There’s no employer loyalty. It’s business as usual. Blood is thicker than water, after all. I know you won’t print this because the people involved may see it! Have a great day, ya’ll.

A big Hooray for Bill Holt and his LMS and LHS chess team. They brought home trophies from the Golden Isles Chess Tournament for the third time. These kids are awesome, smart, and talented and deserve recognition for their accomplishments playing competitive chess. Way to go kids!

The Senate and House committee hearings held on January 23 to ask Secretary Clinton questions about the catastrophe and cover-up in Benghazi just before the November election reminded me of a hog wallow event. It seems everyone present enjoyed the mud that has been spread over a tragic event and few desire to clean it up with the truth.

You have a choice for garbage pick-up in Lowndes County. It’s Deep South Sanitation and their number is 559-0200. We called and talked with the owner and were impressed with his honesty and decided to go with them and support local business instead of a large company. They are not doing recycling yet but, I understand that if they get enough requests for recycling bins they will start that as well.

The issue with executive orders is not that they are being made — that has always been the case. The issue is that this president is intentionally trying to use them to circumvent Congress’ constitutionally delegated authority. That is the essence of a wannabe dictator.

How in the world could any pastor allow men to play on their church softball teams at Freedom Park and almost the whole team doesn’t go to church there or anywhere? Isn’t that against the rules?

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.
