Rant & Rave for Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013

-- — While Echols County does have a history littered with drug-related issues, there are also positive things that occur there. As a proud graduate of Echols County, the area has produced good stock as well such as attorneys, doctors, and some great teachers. There are also teachers that have positively impacted many lives there for years and family-owned businesses that continue to flourish. As with all things, there is always good and bad.

About the SPLOST letter Wednesday: so what’s your point? It’s a penny tax — spend $1, pay 1 penny — spend $45,000, pay 45,000 pennies. Same same! Everyone pays it, we’re not picking visitors' pockets and it really isn’t new — that’s all good. And now the leaders seem to have their heads in the right place as to how and where it is spent — also good.

The reason we don’t have competition with the cable companies in Valdosta: if you would look on your cable bill, you will see $9.95 franchise fee to the city of Valdosta. That is why we don’t  have competition here in Valdosta.

I have been a teacher at Lowndes County for seven years and when I heard the administration at the Board office got raises, it made me sick. This is why teachers are going into other professions. We don’t get any respect and feel like door mats.

Hats off to the sanitation department and the coworkers.  Anyone with complaints should ride the trucks when they pick up  garbage. You would appreciate their jobs more.

To the person that is tired of all the “give away” programs. I for one know that the system is abused a lot!! But there are people that receive these benefits that actually do need them, and I only hope that hard times never fall upon you. I never thought I would be in the shape I’m in today. I used to own a business, drive nice cars and live in fancy homes. Well I got sick, couldn’t work, pay my bills or utilities and now I wish I had not at one point and time had the same attitude that you have. You never know!

The amount of illegal drug transactions going on at Taylor-Cowart Park and Drexel Park is disgraceful and so obvious VPD should be embarrassed.

Oak and Alden is only a “ski jump” if you are driving well above the posted speed limit or have mechanical issues with your vehicle. I suggest you either slow down or see a mechanic.

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.
