Rant & Rave for Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014

-- — The old wives’ tale about catching a cold because you went outside in wet and chilly weather has long been disproved; along with toads causing warts, carrots improving vision, cracking knuckles causing arthritis and chocolate causing acne. In what alternate universe have you been living?

The professor making a left hand turn into Walmart. The driver of a vehicle intending to turn left within an intersection, or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard. 40-6-71.

Way to go City of Lakeland!!! You “fix” a paved road with DIRT!!! Awesome job. Now FIX it RIGHT!!!

Great article by Cal Thomas Dec. 3rd , 2014. It would be equally enlightening to read his research on rich people “ addicted to government benefits.” His ranting days prior on how health coverage will destroy America impugns his egalitarian prose.

It was a very cold morning. I was on a three-mile route to accomplish my daily exercise walk. A car came up alongside me and  a beautiful female college student rolled down her window and handed me a hot cup of coffee. Not only did she warm my body, but my heart as well. Thanks “Alexis” for your kind, caring and generous gesture of human interest. God bless you!

I have a question in all seriousness that needs to be answered before voting begins on the Best of South Georgia. Will we be required to vote in EVERY category once they have been narrowed down? I refuse to vote for a category that glorifies alcohol use, yet last year you could not vote in the final poll unless you chose something in EVERY category. This means that deserving businesses in other categories did not receive votes because of your rule. Please respect my decision to not partake of alcoholic spirits.

I personally feel that many in office have forgotten their oath to the people of this great nation. This nation was founded because of the tyranny of a government that did not respect the people. Think Whig Party

Please get someone to repair and smooth out the train tracks on Main Street in Lake Park. They are really bad.

Thank you, Mayor Gayle, for hitting the nail on the head about lack of funding to repair the Wastewater Treatment Plant. When citizens vote against raising revenue, then the only alternative is to increase water/sewer rates. Mayor Gayle, we appreciate that you care for our city’s elderly and those on fixed incomes who can’t afford a doubling or tripling of their water/sewer bills. SPLOST is funded by out-of-town sales tax, and protects the most financially vulnerable of our citizens.

We don’t need Muslims flying airplanes around South Georgia. That is asking for trouble.

I was appalled to see where the mayor blamed the current administration for not providing grants to fix the sewage problem because “we voted wrong.” These problems didn’t begin in 2009, they have existed all along every time the water flow exceeded the ability of the plant to contain flooding issues. My question would be how many grants were awarded for the necessary repairs when “we voted right”? Why hasn’t the problem been solved already?

If zoning is there to protect the businesses and residents who are already there, why is the Lake Park elected officials wanting to approve a change that does not benefit the people who are already there? Shame on Lake Park mayor and council.

Valdosta Daily Times, you have done a remarkable job in keeping our community posted about the waste treatment situation. Please look into our gasoline crisis situation. I just returned from Florida where I bought gasoline 20 cents per gallon cheaper than what is being charged in Valdosta. Something is wrong with this picture.

I want to thank Brittney who has been my family’s favorite waitress at Cheddar’s since they opened their doors. Saturday night was no exception. She never lost her composure while I witnessed some crude treatment from the customers seated near us. Keep your head up.

VDT, please refrain from posting gun control comments. My son and I were at breakfast and he mentioned the low price of assault rifles at a gun show. I said that I was opposed to these. Two fellows overheard this and on their way out, the larger one said that I sounded like some the "communists" writing against America in the newspaper. He said that if were up to him I would be “lined up.” He got into a dilapidated Dodge pickup with anti-Obama, pro NRA, and a Baptist Church bumper sticker.

It wasn’t  Remerton where  the rats were escaping to Azalea Drive, it was  from the raw sewage. At least  they are smarter than people.

Thomas Jefferson said that we don't keep and bear fire arms for any other reason than to protect ourselves from tyrannical government action. That is why the liberals are trying to suppress Christians’ freedom of speech and why the government is trying to label gun ownership as a bad idea.
