Rant & Rave for October 29, 2009

I like the idea of year-round schools, also. However, teachers and other state employees are already being furloughed because the state supposedly can't afford to pay them. How do you propose to cover the increased costs of year-round schools?

Don't back down Dr. Cason. This small group of misinformed folks will soon realize that you have the students’ best interest at heart. I want my kids (who are in VCS) to have the best leadership and I don't care what color they are as long as they have your goals and vision for VCS.

I disagree with year-round school. Just because other countries have it means nothing. Back in the day, we were number one in the world and the school year was the same as it is now. What has changed is who controls what is being taught and our attitudes as students and parents.

Get the U.S. troops and mercenaries out of Iraq now, before even more innocent women and children are slaughtered. We should never have been there in the first place. Why doesn't anyone have the courage to stop this madness that Bush initiated?

There is so much jealousy of teachers and their careers, it's very obvious. We have and do work hard for our positions, with most weeks double the hours we are paid for. Our jobs are not eight hours a day. It continues after we get home grading papers, etc., and meetings. We need the summer vacation to relax a little with our families, but a lot of those weeks we are preparing for the next year or more meetings. We chose the career because we love our students and want to see them succeed in life. That is a great reward.

It seems that our county engineer acts as if he owns Lowndes County and can talk to the hard-working taxpayers as if they were his pawns. The last time I checked, we the taxpayers pay his salary. Common courtesy goes a long way!

Why can't The Times address the real issue? Had not Bush-Cheney involved the U.S. in their war for Halliburton, and concentrated on the real threat, Al-Qaeda, we probably would have some handle on the war in Afghanistan by now. We wouldn't be eight years past 9-11 with the situation deteriorating.

Please, please reconsider the name for Valdosta Tech. I do not want to say I graduated from Wiregrass Tech.
