VALDOSTA — THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta State University Blazers. Today, the Blazers battle Minnesota State-Mankato in the national semi-final game. The Blazers have played exceptional football this year. Fans who cannot make the trip can watch the game scheduled for 3 p.m. EST Saturday on Let’s go, Blazers!

THUMBS UP: To Jane Osborn. This past week, Valdosta Civic Roundtable presented Osborn with its 2012 Louie Peeples White Award for Outstanding Community Service. Award presenter Donald O. Davis showed several filled pages of Osborn’s accomplishments and group memberships to the luncheon’s audience. She has made social work her life and Valdosta her home. The region has been blessed by her commitment to both.

THUMBS UP: To Valdosta High School Marchin’ Cats trombone player Kreshon McDowell for being chosen to perform jazz in Cuba recently. Having survived Hurricane Katrina, McDowell has returned to New Orleans each summer to participate in the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Jazz Camp.

THUMBS UP: To Lowndes High School Vikettes Cara Parker and Heather Robinson for being named to the all-state softball teams. Infielder Cara Parker was named to the First Team and named as a Senior All-Star, while utility player Heather Robinson was named to the Second Team.

THUMBS UP: To Times readers who continue giving to the Empty Stocking Fund, which ensures that more than 1,200 area children will have toys come Christmas morning. With the Salvation Army and Guardian Bank, The Times has supported the Empty Stocking Fund for decades. It’s a good cause that has brought joy to deserving children for generations.
