The gift of local shops, stores

The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — With Thanksgiving being at the earliest time possible this year, shoppers have plenty of time a week and half after eating the late November turkey to shop for Christmas presents.

With the first weekend of December also behind us, there remain three more weekends between now and Dec. 25. That’s more than three weeks of shopping possibilities.

Perhaps, you have already taken care of those known gifts such as video game systems and big TVs but are having a more difficult time finding just the right item for other people on your gift list.

We would suggest taking a closer look at home-grown South Georgia businesses. There are numerous locally owned businesses in Valdosta, Lowndes County and in outlying towns and neighboring counties. These shops not only offer great deals, they have unexpected and unique items for sell.

Sometimes, the businesses themselves are unexpected finds for shoppers.

In our bustling lives, we often drive along our city streets without fully appreciating what is available on these streets. Or we rush through a neighboring town without stopping to see the shops open amidst the blurs of our passing cars.

So if you can’t find the right thing for that person in your life, take advantage of these extra shopping days to find these area shops. Park downtown, or park in one of the outlying towns, get out of the car and walk through these businesses’ doors. See what they have to offer.

You might just find something for that person who is hard to buy for, and find something for yourself, too.
