What would be better than a Valdosta State University Blazers win against Carson-Newman this weekend?
Thousands of spectators witnessing the victory from the seats of Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
There is a push on this week to increase the number of VSU fans attending the noon game this Saturday. The Times has joined this effort to fill the seats as the No. 17 Blazers compete in the NCAA quarterfinal game.
If VSU wins and enough fans are in attendance, the next game may well be played in Valdosta and be aired by sports cable network ESPN.
Last weekend, when the Blazers looked into their bleachers, they saw less than 2,000 VSU fans supporting them.
Granted, the low attendance owed something to it being the Thanksgiving weekend when many students were home with families and many other local fans were out of town. But it isn’t just holiday weekends that affect Blazers support. The team could always use a little more community backing.
With national championships as part of its history, the VSU Blazers have played a part in earning Valdosta our TitleTown USA honor. We can all do our part by spending an afternoon with the Blazers, cheering them on, rooting for them, and filling the seats as our local team moves forward in the playoffs.
The No. 17 Blazers play No. 22 Carson-Newman, noon Saturday, Dec. 1, Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Tickets: $18 for reserved seats; $10 for general admission; $5 students/youth and seniors (65 and older).
