VALDOSTA — THUMBS UP: To Kelly Barcol, the area preacher who will literally fight to raise funds for his church. At 44, the House of Joy pastor will compete against a 26-year-old in the Bud Light Winter Heat next weekend. Heat promoter James Corbett has promised all of the event’s proceeds to the House of Joy. Through faith and endurance, Barcol proves that age is just a number.

THUMBS UP: To Valdosta School of Ballet for its continued dedication to raising money for Valdosta State University Theatre & Dance student scholarships. During the past seven years, Valdosta School of Ballet and VSU Theatre & Dance have raised nearly $50,000 in scholarship money. This weekend, the tradition continues with dance performances of “Cinderella,” 7:30 p.m. today, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Valdosta High School Performing Arts Center, 3101 N. Forrest St.

THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta Symphony Guild     and the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra for taking  the time to introduce children to classical music  and musical instruments with Tunes for Tots       scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon today, Whitehead Auditorium, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood. The free event includes a hands-on demonstration of instruments and a performance from the young members of the South Georgia String Project.
