The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — THUMBS UP: To Coach David Dean and the Valdosta State University Blazers again for their overwhelming win last week of the NCAA Division II National Championship. The Blazers overcame all odds and all of the naysayers for riveting championship season. Congratulations, Blazers!

THUMBS UP: To all who have donated to the Empty Stocking Fund. This year’s fund raises money for next year’s presents. The more money raised this year means the more children who will be helped next year. Two years ago, the fund raised enough to help about 900 registered kids. Last year, the fund raised enough money to help about 1,200 children this year. Let’s help at least as many kids next year by continuing to give to the Empty Stocking Fund through Christmas and into the New Year.

THUMBS UP: To Jessica Jordan. The 8-year-old       girl entered a pageant and won an appearance on a TV show. Born with a heart defect, the youngster has tried many things during her life. She has   played soccer, taken ballet, won a pageant and appeared on TV. Who knows what great things she may do next?

THUMBS UP: To Dr. Gerald Merwin, director of Valdosta State University Adult Academic Degree Completion and Professional Development Programs. Recently, Merwin led VSU to win the 2012 Council for Adult and Experiential Learning Institutional Service Award, and more importantly, he has helped numerous area adults find a new career and a new lease on life.
