Thumbs up

The Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — THUMBS UP: To the many organizations and groups that have been helping raise awareness and funds during September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. These events not only educate people on childhood cancer, raise money for research and support for area cancer families, but they also serve as a reminder to families facing childhood cancer that the community is behind them and there for them.

THUMBS UP: To the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra for keeping the tradition of classical music alive with this evening’s season-opening concert, but also sharing something new, exciting and different. The VSO will perform works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. It will also perform the American premiere of composer Ned McGowan’s Concerto for iPad and Orchestra. McGowan’s wife, Keiko Shichijo, a renowned pianist, will perform as soloist using the iPad. Concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. today, Whitehead Auditorium, Valdosta State University Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood.

THUMBS UP: To Dr. Brian Hickox of Valdosta for receiving the Georgia Rehabilitation Association’s highest honor, the Personal Achievement Award. Hickox has not allowed blindness to affect his ability to strive and succeed. He is a Valdosta chiropractor, who opened his practice last year in Valdosta. Congratulations, Dr. Hickox.
