The Valdosta Daily Times

-- — THUMBS UP: To Valdosta High School Marchin’ Cats. For the third year, the VHS band hosted the Southern Open. The event is a non-competitive performance forum which provides bands with judges’ constructive commentary. Bands may use these insights for the remaining half-time performances or the series of October competitions. The Open also provides regional bands an opportunity to see and hear each other perform. Great job, Marchin’ Cats!

THUMBS UP: To Readers Forum. The Valdosta book club celebrates 80 years as an organization this year. To kick off the 80-year celebration season, Readers Forum hosted Drew Jubera, author of “Must Win,” a frank and compelling look at the modern Valdosta High School Wildcats.

THUMBS UP: To all who have helped raise awareness and money toward childhood cancers this month. September has been Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Numerous organizations and events have been held to fund research into eradicating childhood cancer and toward raising money to help families struggling to make ends meet as they face pediatric cancer.

THUMBS UP: To Westside Elementary School, Pine Grove Elementary School, Lowndes Middle School and Lowndes High School for winning Gov. Nathan Deal’s SHAPE Award. These schools met three criteria: physical activity, nutrition and wellness.
