The Valdosta Daily Times
For 70 years, the Boys and Girls Club has been positively changing the lives of Valdosta and Lowndes County youths.
To celebrate this benchmark, the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta hosts a community event at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1. Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal is scheduled to attend.
In January 1944, Henry Hicks, Comer Cherry and R.H. Blankenship met at the old Daniel Ashley Hotel and organized the club. In the mid-1950s, the Valdosta Girls Club was created.
The two clubs merged in 1979, forming the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta.
With this 70th anniversary, the community can point back to the year of the club’s origins. We can list the numerous after-school, sporting and other programs provided by the Boys & Girls Club. The region can hail the club’s Valdosta locations, its facilities, fields and centers.
Yet, determining the Boys & Girls Club’s impact on Valdosta and South Georgia is immeasurable. It has served as the lifeline for generations of youngsters. It has been the meeting point of untold lifelong relationships. It has been the catalyst to positively change so many lives and better our community.
And the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta continues striving to influence young lives, day in and day out. It dares to make a difference based on the experience of making a difference for so many years.
